Item: Used mattresses — and the box springs, foundations and bed frames that usually leave the house with them.

Jurisdiction: City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) service area only. Eligibility runs with the CPS Energy account billed the City services (solid waste) fee plus the Environmental Fee — not with a San Antonio mailing address and not simply with living inside the city limits.

A mattress is one of the easiest bulky items to get rid of in San Antonio — and one of the easiest to get wrong. The pile goes out a week early, the collection week belongs to a different zone, the mattress ends up in the alley behind an apartment building, or someone spends a Saturday driving to a charity that has never accepted mattresses.

Three things decide the rest: whether the CPS Energy account at your address pays the City services fee, which week your address is assigned, and whether the mattress is clean enough to be collected at all. Get those right and a used mattress usually leaves the house for free.

This guide runs in the order that saves the most money: free curbside first, free self-haul second, paid options last — plus the routes that look right and are not.

Quick Answer

Inside the City of San Antonio SWMD service area, a used mattress is a bulky item — not trash, not brush, and not household hazardous waste. Mattresses are on the accepted list for the twice-yearly curbside brush-and-bulky collection, at no additional fee for customers who pay the City services (solid waste) fee through a CPS Energy account.

The pile must be no more than 8 cubic yards, within 8 feet of the curb, and ready by 7 a.m. the Monday of your assigned collection week. A door hanger arrives 7–10 days ahead, and the hanger date is your set-out date, not the collection day. Crews can take up to a week and the truck passes only once — do not set anything out before the hanger arrives.

Cannot wait? Self-haul is free year-round at four Bulky Waste Collection Centers — Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra and Rigsby Road — for residential customers who bring a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, with a 4-cubic-yard limit per visit. An out-of-cycle pickup costs $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 for each additional 4 cubic yards.

Three common beliefs about San Antonio mattresses are wrong, and each one costs someone a wasted trip. No wrapping is required by any City page checked for this guide (checked 2026-09-09) — the City's only covering rule is the $5 Tarp Law penalty for uncovered vehicle and brush loads at disposal centers. Mattresses cannot be donated to Goodwill San Antonio or Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio. And no public mattress-recycling drop-off is confirmed in San Antonio, because Texas has no statewide mattress recycling program.

Two things to verify before anything moves: your address's collection week, and — for an apartment — whether your address is served by City curbside bulky collection at all. Questions: 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (open 7 a.m.–7 p.m. daily).

Why a Mattress Is a Bulky Item — and Never Cart, Brush or Hazardous Waste

Mattresses appear on the City's curbside bulky accepted list alongside furniture, large appliances, water heaters, barbecue grills, small carpeting, fencing, car tires (6 or fewer, no rims) and up to 3 TVs. They also appear on the Bulky Waste Collection Centers accepted list.

Three other routes look plausible and are wrong:

  • Not the brown garbage cart. Under the City code, bulky waste is material of irregular size that does not readily fit into a refuse container. A mattress does not belong in a cart.
  • Not a Brush Collection Center. The brush centers take paper-bagged leaves, shrubs, tree branches and woody vines only, and they list "bulky household items" and car tires as unaccepted.
  • Not household hazardous waste. The HHW drop-off at 7030 Culebra Road takes chemicals and e-waste only.

Mixing lanes is a violation, not a technicality: a bulky item in a brush pile, or brush in a bulky pile, is a wrong-content set-out under City Code Chapter 14.

Is Your Address Covered?

Eligibility runs with the account, not simply with living inside the city limits. The City describes curbside brush-and-bulky service for customers who pay the City services (solid waste) fee through a CPS Energy account. If your address is billed that way, bulky collection is part of the service; if it is not, it is not.

  • Apartments and multi-family properties secure their own collection services, and only a small property is drawn into the City rule (see the renter section below).
  • Independent Bexar County cities and unincorporated Bexar County are outside the City program. The County frames bulk and brush pickup as 4 cubic yards once per quarter through the resident's contracted hauler.
  • Businesses are not eligible for the residential bulky program or the bulky centers and must use a City-permitted private hauler.

Monthly charges from the City's Rates & Fees page run $14.76 (48-gallon cart), $20.26 (64-gallon) or $30.75 (96-gallon), plus Environmental Fee – Solid Waste $3.00 and Environmental Fee – Parks $2.00. Recycling and organics carts carry no additional fee.

The Twice-Yearly Curbside Brush-and-Bulky Collection (Free)

This is the lowest-cost route and the one most households should plan around — provided the timing works.

  1. Confirm the week. Collection weeks are address-specific; never assume a citywide date. Look yours up at gis.sanantonio.gov/swmd/mycollectionday or call 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000.
  2. Wait for the door hanger (it arrives 7–10 days ahead). The City's instruction is not to set out brush or bulky items until it does, and the hanger date is your set-out date, not the collection day.
  3. Be out by 7 a.m. Monday of the collection week. Miss it and the pile waits for the next rotation, or you book an out-of-cycle collection.
  4. Where exactly. At the curb in front of the house even if your carts are serviced in the alley, within 8 feet of the curb, and clear of parked cars, low limbs, water meters, sidewalks and vacant lots.
  5. How big. No more than 8 cubic yards — a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 feet, so measure depth × length × width in feet and divide by 27.
  6. What a bad set-out costs. A pile with the wrong content, an obstructed pile, or a pile set out after crews pass can draw a fine up to $2,000 per day plus a collection and disposal fee under City Code Chapter 14.

One boundary to plan around: the City publishes no per-street collection day. The published window is your collection week, the requirement is 7 a.m. Monday, and the truck passes once. If the mattress has to be gone on a specific date, curbside is the wrong tool.

The 8 Versus 4 Question

Both figures are real, and they apply to different channels. Curbside piles are capped at 8 cubic yards. The 4-cubic-yard figure is the Bulky Waste Collection Center limit per visit and the size tier in the out-of-cycle fee schedule. Curbside mattress pickups are not capped at 4 cubic yards.

Do San Antonio Mattresses Have to Be Wrapped?

No. No official City page checked for this guide requires a mattress to be wrapped, bagged, taped or encased in plastic — at the curb or at a bulky center (checked 2026-09-09). The curbside page, the bulky-center page, the collection-day page, Rates & Fees, Free Landfill Day, the brush-center page and the Community Collections page all list mattresses as accepted with no wrapping condition attached.

This is an absence of a rule, not an exemption the City granted. Other cities do impose wrap-and-bag rules on mattresses, which is why the belief travels — but it has no City of San Antonio basis.

The only covering rule the City publishes here is the $5 Tarp Law penalty under City Code Chapter 14, Sec. 18 (Ordinance No. 2015-09-10-0760), and it applies to uncovered vehicle and brush loads at disposal centers — not to a mattress lying at the curb.

Wrapping is optional. If you wrap anyway, keep the item recognizable to the crew and add no prohibited material; wrapping does not create acceptance and does not override the contamination rule below.

If You Cannot Wait — Out-of-Cycle Collection (Paid)

Extra brush or bulky collection is available by request online through the City customer portal or by calling 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000: $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 for each additional 4 cubic yards or portion.

No mattress-specific City fee is published — a mattress is billed as a bulky item like anything else in that class. Confirm the current fee when you book.

The Four Free Bulky Waste Collection Centers (Self-Haul)

Year-round, and usually the fastest answer for one mattress.

  • Bitters — 1800 Wurzbach Parkway, 78216
  • Frio City Road — 1531 Frio City Road, 78226
  • Culebra — 7030 Culebra Road, 78238
  • Rigsby Road — 2755 Rigsby Road, 78222

Hours: Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m. (closed holidays).

Required: residential customers only; a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID. There is no additional charge for environmental-fee payers. The limit is 4 cubic yards of bulky items per visit, plus up to 1 cubic yard of construction debris; no household trash and no commercial-hauler loads; truck loads must not exceed the bed's fender wall; and the customer unloads at the site. Cover the load with a tarp — the Tarp Law carries a $5 penalty at City disposal and processing centers.

The center list is not the curbside list. The centers also take auto parts, flattened cardboard, glass and mirrors, sinks, tubs and counter tops, and up to 1 cubic yard of construction material and lumber. They refuse bagged garbage, bed linens, boards longer than 10 feet, brush and yard waste, clothes, hazardous material, railroad ties, soil, rocks and concrete, Styrofoam, unbagged insulation and the 275-gallon rebottled IBC tote.

The one mattress condition rule the City publishes applies here: the centers explicitly refuse "mattresses with blood stains or bed bugs," along with soiled couch cushions with blood or bed bugs. The curbside accepted list carries no condition wording, so treat the center rule as the safer standard — if your mattress is stained or infested, call 3-1-1 for guidance rather than loading it or setting it out.

Free Landfill Day (Quarterly, Date-Sensitive)

Quarterly Free Landfill Days accept mattresses at Republic Services Landfill, 7000 IH 10 E, 78219 and Waste Management Landfill, 8611 Covel Road, 78252 for City of San Antonio solid waste fee rate payers with a valid picture ID and a recent CPS Energy statement showing payment of the City Services solid waste fee. Loads must be covered with a tarp per City Ordinance No. 2015-09-10-0760, and a safety vest may be required at the Waste Management site.

Not accepted: brick, brush, commercial waste, construction materials, dirt, industrial waste, lumber, roofing materials and sheet rock.

No date is published here. The event is quarterly and the dates move, so get the current one from the live Free Landfill Day page or 3-1-1 before you load.

Donation Is Not a Mattress Route

The City encourages donating usable items, and for furniture that is good advice — but not for mattresses.

  • Goodwill San Antonio accepts gently used furniture and household goods in clean, sellable condition and offers a free home pickup for other bulky items. Its accepted list excludes "mattresses/box springs."
  • Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio books free donation pickups for solid wood furniture, spotless sofas and chairs, appliances and building materials. The Habitat Home Center lists "mattresses and box springs" as an unacceptable donation.
  • The Salvation Army schedules pickup by ZIP code at satruck.org, 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825). Availability and mattress acceptance for a San Antonio address are ZIP- and item-dependent, so confirm before counting on a pickup — many chapters refuse mattresses for hygiene reasons.

If you have other usable furniture to move, that free pickup is a real route: see the furniture guide at /tx/san-antonio/furniture-disposal/.

Where a Mattress Actually Ends Up — and Why No Local Recycling Drop-Off Is Confirmed

Texas has no statewide mattress recycling program and no mattress stewardship or EPR fee. The Mattress Recycling Council's "Bye Bye Mattress" program covers California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island only. Mattresses are not a TCEQ special waste either — TCEQ's matrix lists materials such as contaminated soil and asbestos, while mattresses fall under ordinary municipal solid waste rules (30 TAC 330). In practice, City-collected mattresses are typically landfilled.

A San Antonio nonprofit, Re-Mat, was founded in 2017 to work toward a mattress recycling facility, but no confirmed operating public drop-off was found. Do not treat any local recycler's address, hours or fee as verified. Ask 3-1-1 whether anything has changed.

Retailer Haul-Away — Only With a Purchase

Retailer haul-away is a paid, purchase-linked add-on in Texas, which has no free take-back mandate.

  • Mattress Firm Red Carpet Delivery can remove the old set equal to the number of pieces purchased. The page checked lists tiers at $99.99 / $149.99 / $199.99 with promotional prices of free / $49.99 / $99.99.
  • IKEA in-store removal starts at $30 with a mattress or box-spring purchase plus in-home delivery in select markets; it is not available with online orders.

These are the retailers' own terms, and the pricing moves. Confirm the exact charge at checkout, and expect a delivery team to refuse an unsanitary bed.

Community Collections / Dial-A-Trailer (Neighborhood Program)

Dial-A-Trailer stations a truck at a neighborhood site on a designated Saturday and accepts mattresses, furniture, appliances, metals, clean brush and up to 4 vehicle tires. It is a group program, not a household pickup: four reservations per Saturday citywide, one unit per cleanup, organizations limited to two events per calendar year, city limits only, and the request must be sponsored by a non-profit neighborhood organization. Schedule at 210-207-6428. Bricks, commercial waste, concrete, construction and remodeling materials, hazardous waste, railroad ties, and soil or sod are not accepted.

If you are clearing one house, this is not your route. If your neighborhood association or church is organizing a cleanup, it is a strong one.

Paid Options — City-Permitted Private Haulers

Private haulers must hold a City Commercial Solid Waste Hauler Vehicle Permit under Chapter 14. The City publishes an Official Online Waste Hauler List (FY2026) of permitted companies with phone numbers and accepted waste types.

The City publishes no hauler prices. That list changes with each fiscal year, so re-verify any company name or number against the live document before you call, and treat contact details from other sources as unconfirmed. Get a written quote, ask what the provider will and will not take, and compare it against the free curbside and free self-haul routes first.

This is the workable route for apartments on private collection, commercial cleanouts, out-of-city addresses, a contaminated mattress, or a deadline the City routes cannot meet.

Apartment and Renter Edge Cases

For most large complexes the honest answer is: not established — confirm before you move anything. City eligibility runs with the CPS Energy account paying the City services solid waste fee, and the closest official statement on apartments is narrow: "Owners or managers of multi-family properties with eight or fewer units may request to receive and pay curbside recycling and garbage collection service the City." Larger complexes secure their own collection services under the City's Chapter 14 multi-family recycling ordinance, and no City page states whether their tenants get curbside bulky collection.

  • Ask the property manager or leasing office first. Management must tell residents where containers are and what is accepted, so they are the right first contact for a mattress coming out of a unit. Then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).
  • Do not use the community dumpster, compactor area or alley. If the building's contract does not cover bulky items, an oversized or unreported set-out creates waste-violation and cost exposure for you and the property. The City provides an illegal-dumping report channel through 3-1-1.
  • Verified renter routes: self-haul to a bulky center with a recent CPS Energy bill showing the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, if you have the account documentation and a vehicle; or pay a City-permitted private hauler or junk-removal service.
  • Chemicals found while clearing a unit — paint, cleaners, batteries, motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides, fluorescent fixtures and e-waste — go to the HHW center at 7030 Culebra Road in original containers with a CPS Energy bill and photo ID. See the paint guide at /tx/san-antonio/paint-disposal/ and the e-waste guide at /tx/san-antonio/ewaste-disposal/.
  • In Alamo Heights, Converse, Schertz, Live Oak, Universal City or unincorporated Bexar County? You are outside the City program. Check that city's solid waste office or its 3-1-1 equivalent.
  • Landlord, HOA or condo board rules still apply. Management can control where a mattress may be left and who may book a hauler.

Prepare and Verify Before the Mattress Leaves the Building

  1. Confirm your status — the address must be in the SWMD service area, gated by the CPS Energy account billed the City services fee plus the Environmental Fee.
  2. Look up your collection week at gis.sanantonio.gov/swmd/mycollectionday or 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000, and wait for the door hanger; the hanger date is the set-out date.
  3. Be out by 7 a.m. Monday, at the curb in front of the house and within 8 feet of it, clear of obstructions.
  4. Keep the pile within 8 cubic yards, with brush, yard waste, concrete, construction material, glass and mirrors, hazardous waste, roofing material, soil and rocks kept out of it.
  5. Do not wrap for a rule that does not exist. If you wrap anyway, keep the item recognizable to the crew and add no prohibited material.
  6. Treat the box spring as part of the same bulky set — but confirm it. The City lists only "Mattresses" and does not separately name box springs, foundations, adjustable bases or bed frames. Call 3-1-1 before you plan around a motorized base.
  7. Self-hauling? Bring the CPS Energy bill showing the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, cap the load at 4 cubic yards of bulky items (1 cubic yard of construction debris), stay within the truck bed's fender wall, tarp the load, and unload it yourself.
  8. Contaminated mattress? Call 3-1-1 before doing anything.
  9. Rule out the wrong doors: HHW at 7030 Culebra Road takes chemicals and e-waste only; the Brush Collection Center takes brush only; Goodwill and Habitat do not accept mattresses.
  10. Need it gone sooner? Confirm the current out-of-cycle fee and how to book it. Checking Free Landfill Day? Verify the live date and site rules first.
  11. Renting? Ask the property manager, then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).
  12. Hiring a hauler? Re-verify the company against the City's current permitted-hauler list and get a written quote; the City publishes no prices.

Safety Warnings

  • Lift with help. A mattress and box spring are heavy and awkward, and stairs are where injuries happen — use a two-person lift or a dolly, never one person alone on stairs.
  • Never leave a mattress in a community dumpster, compactor area or alley. The City provides an illegal-dumping report channel through 3-1-1, and oversized or unreported set-outs create waste-violation and cost exposure.
  • Keep the set-out compliant. A wrong-content, obstructed or late pile can draw a fine up to $2,000 per day plus collection and disposal costs.
  • Never set out household hazardous waste with a mattress. Paint, cleaners, motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides and batteries stay in original labeled containers for the HHW center.
  • Place the mattress only at the curb, within 8 feet of it, clear of parked cars, low tree limbs, water meters, sidewalks and vacant lots.
  • Secure and tarp self-hauled loads so the mattress cannot shift or fall onto the road.
  • Do not bury electronics, TVs or appliances in or under a mattress set-out. Up to 3 TVs are accepted curbside; e-waste belongs at the HHW center or a take-back program.
  • Business cleanout? None of the residential bulky routes apply — use a City-permitted private hauler.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Believing a San Antonio curb mattress must be wrapped or bagged. No City page requires it.
  • Thinking curbside mattress piles are capped at 4 cubic yards — curbside is 8; the bulky centers and the out-of-cycle fee tier are the ones at 4.
  • Setting the mattress out before the door hanger arrives, leaving it out after crews pass, or treating the hanger date as the collection day.
  • Leaning a mattress in front of a parked car, under low limbs, on a water meter or on a vacant lot.
  • Mixing brush, construction debris, glass and mirrors, or hazardous waste into the mattress pile.
  • Putting the mattress in the brown garbage cart, or taking it to a Brush Collection Center or the HHW drop-off at 7030 Culebra Road.
  • Assuming Goodwill or Habitat will take it — both exclude mattresses and box springs.
  • Driving to an unconfirmed mattress-recycling drop-off, or expecting Texas to have a program it does not have.
  • Using a community dumpster, compactor area or alley, or assuming an apartment building or a Bexar County suburb follows the City's rules.
  • Expecting a curbside crew to take a mattress with bed bugs or blood stains.

FAQ

Will San Antonio pick up my old mattress at the curb? Yes, if your address is in the SWMD service area and the CPS Energy account billed the City services fee covers it. Mattresses are an accepted bulky item in the twice-yearly collection, within an 8-cubic-yard pile. Confirm your collection week first.

Do I need an appointment? No. The collection runs on your assigned week — wait for the door hanger, set the mattress out when it says to, and have it ready by 7 a.m. the Monday of that week. Only an out-of-cycle collection needs booking, and the bulky centers are not appointment-based either.

Do I have to wrap or bag the mattress? No. No City page checked requires it at the curb or at a bulky center (checked 2026-09-09). The City's only covering rule is the $5 Tarp Law penalty for uncovered vehicle or brush loads at disposal centers. If you wrap anyway, keep the item recognizable to the crew.

Is the limit 4 cubic yards or 8? Both are real but apply to different channels: 8 cubic yards is the curbside pile cap; 4 cubic yards is the bulky-center limit per visit and the out-of-cycle fee tier.

I cannot wait — what does an extra pickup cost? $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 for each additional 4 cubic yards or portion, booked online or via 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000. No mattress-specific City fee is published.

Where can I drop a mattress off for free, and when? The four Bulky Waste Collection Centers — Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra and Rigsby Road — Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m., for residential customers with a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, limited to 4 cubic yards of bulky items per visit. You unload at the site.

Will a center take a mattress with bed bugs or blood stains? No — the centers explicitly reject "mattresses with blood stains or bed bugs," and the curbside list carries no condition wording. Call 3-1-1 for guidance instead of setting it out.

Can I take the mattress to Free Landfill Day instead? Yes, if you are a City solid waste fee rate payer with a valid picture ID, a recent CPS Energy statement, and a tarped load, at Republic Services Landfill (7000 IH 10 E) or Waste Management Landfill (8611 Covel Road). Check the live page or 3-1-1 for the current quarterly date.

Will the HHW center take my mattress? No — HHW at 7030 Culebra Road takes chemicals and e-waste only.

Can I take the mattress to a brush center? No. The Brush Collection Center (Bitters, 1800 Wurzbach Pkwy; Nelson Gardens, 8963 Nelson Road) takes paper-bagged leaves, shrubs, tree branches and woody vines, and explicitly lists "bulky household items" and car tires as unaccepted.

I rent an apartment. Can I use the City's curbside mattress pickup? Not established. Only owners or managers of properties with eight or fewer units may request to receive and pay for City curbside recycling and garbage collection; larger complexes secure their own hauler under the City's Chapter 14 multi-family rules. Ask your property manager first, then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).

Can I donate or recycle the mattress instead? No to donation at the major local charities — Goodwill San Antonio and Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio both exclude mattresses and box springs. Recycling is unconfirmed too: Texas has no statewide mattress recycling program, and no public San Antonio drop-off was found.

What will a private hauler or junk-removal company charge? Unknown — the City publishes a permitted-hauler list with phone numbers and waste types but no prices. Get a written quote and confirm what the provider will and will not take.

What does NOT belong in a mattress set-out? Brush, leaves and yard waste; concrete; construction and demolition material; glass and mirrors; household hazardous waste; roofing material; soil and rocks. Glass and mirrors and up to 1 cubic yard of construction material and lumber are accepted only at the bulky centers, not at the curb.

Is my box spring covered by the same rules? The City's accepted lists name "Mattresses" and do not separately name box springs, foundations, adjustable bases or bed frames, so treat a box spring as part of the same bulky set but confirm the treatment with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 before a curbside set-out.

Does a state rule change any of this? No. Texas has no statewide mattress recycling program and no mattress stewardship fee — Bye Bye Mattress covers only California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island — and mattresses are not a TCEQ special waste, so they fall under ordinary municipal solid waste rules (30 TAC 330). The City's own pages govern a San Antonio address.
