Item: Household furniture — sofas, couches, sectionals and loveseats, chairs and recliners, tables and desks, dressers, bookcases, cabinets and patio furniture — plus the items that usually leave the house in the same load, such as mattresses, large appliances, TVs and carpet remnants.
Jurisdiction: City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) service area only. Eligibility runs with the CPS Energy account billed the City services (solid waste) fee plus the Environmental Fee — not with a San Antonio mailing address and not simply with living inside the city limits.

A sofa is not hard to get rid of in San Antonio. It is just easy to get the details wrong — and the details are where this process actually breaks: the collection week that does not apply to your street, the pile set out a week early, the four-cubic-yard limit that turns out not to be the curbside limit at all, the charity pickup that was never booked, and the apartment address whose eligibility nobody will confirm in writing.
Three things decide everything else: whether the CPS Energy account at your address pays the City services fee, which week your address is assigned, and whether the piece is good enough to donate. Get those right and most furniture leaves the house for free.
This guide goes in the order that saves you the most money: donate first, curbside second, self-haul third, paid options last.
Quick Answer
Inside the City of San Antonio SWMD service area, household furniture is a bulky item — not trash, and not household hazardous waste. Sofas, couches, sectionals, loveseats, chairs, tables, dressers, desks, bookcases and patio furniture are all on the accepted bulky list for the twice-yearly curbside brush-and-bulky collection, at no additional fee for customers who pay the City services (solid waste) fee through a CPS Energy account.
The pile must be no more than 8 cubic yards, within 8 feet of the curb, and ready by 7 a.m. the Monday of your assigned collection week. The City sends a door hanger 7–10 days ahead; the hanger date is your set-out date, not the pickup day — crews can take up to a week and the truck passes only once. Do not set anything out before the hanger arrives.
Cannot wait for your rotation week? Self-haul is free year-round at four Bulky Waste Collection Centers — Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra and Rigsby Road — for residential customers who bring a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, with a 4-cubic-yard limit per visit. An out-of-cycle pickup costs $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 per additional 4 cubic yards.
Two things to verify before you move anything: your address's collection week, and whether your specific address — especially an apartment — is served by City curbside bulky collection at all.

Is Your Address Covered?
Eligibility runs with the account, not simply with living inside the city limits. The City describes curbside service as being for customers who pay the City services (solid waste) fee through a CPS Energy account. If your address is billed that way, bulky collection is part of the service; if it is not, it is not.
That matters most for three groups:
- Apartments and other multi-family properties. Multi-family properties secure their own collection services (an existing hauler, another hauler, or self-haul), and only a "small multi-family property" may be eligible to pay for and receive City collection services. No City page confirms curbside bulky service for tenants of large complexes.
- Independent Bexar County cities and unincorporated Bexar County. These are outside the City of San Antonio program and run their own. The City publishes no suburb-by-suburb list, so check with your own city or county solid waste office.
- Businesses. Commercial customers are not eligible for the residential program or the bulky centers and must use a City-permitted private hauler.
One more check for anyone who is technically inside the city but has always paid a landlord, an HOA or a private hauler directly: if the CPS Energy account at the unit is not the one billed the City services fee, the free curbside route may not be yours to book. Call 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 before you plan around it.
Monthly charges from the City's Rates & Fees page run $14.76 (48-gallon cart), $20.26 (64-gallon) or $30.75 (96-gallon), plus Environmental Fee – Solid Waste $3.00 and Environmental Fee – Parks $2.00. Recycling and organics carts carry no additional fee.
The Twice-Yearly Curbside Brush-and-Bulky Collection (Free)
Brush and bulky collection is provided twice per year at no additional fee, and furniture belongs in the bulky lane — never mixed into a brush pile.
Accepted bulky items: furniture, mattresses, large appliances, water heaters, barbecue grills, small pieces of carpeting, car tires (6 or fewer, no rims), fencing and up to 3 TVs. The Services Guide also lists up to 3 wooden pallets.
Not accepted curbside: brush, leaves and yard waste; concrete; construction or demolition material; glass and mirrors; household hazardous waste; roofing material; and soil and rocks. One prohibited item can make the whole set-out non-compliant — including the furniture you were trying to shed.
The collection is not a same-week service and it is not citywide on one date. Two collections a year is the whole allowance, which is why timing matters more here than in cities that take furniture on call.
Set-Out Rules, the Door Hanger and the Penalty
- Look up your week first. Collection weeks are address-specific; never assume a citywide date. Use the My Collection Day lookup at gis.sanantonio.gov/swmd/mycollectionday or call 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (open 7 a.m.–7 p.m. daily).
- Wait for the door hanger. It arrives 7–10 days before your collection week, and the City's instruction is not to set out brush or bulky items until it does. The hanger date is the set-out date, not the collection day.
- Be out by 7 a.m. Monday of the collection week. Crews can take up to a week to reach you, and trucks pass only once.
- Where exactly. At the curb in front of the house even if your garbage cart is serviced in the alley, and within 8 feet of the curb. Keep the pile clear of parked cars, low limbs, water meters, sidewalks and vacant lots.
- What a bad set-out costs. A pile with the wrong material (brush in a bulky pile, or bulky items in a brush pile), an obstructed pile, or a pile set out after crews pass can draw a fine up to $2,000 per day plus a collection and disposal fee under City Code Chapter 14.
How Big Is 8 Cubic Yards, Really?
A cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 feet, so estimate a pile by measuring depth × length × width in feet and dividing by 27. A pile 3 feet deep, 12 feet long and 6 feet wide is 216 cubic feet — exactly 8 cubic yards, roughly a full room of furniture plus a couple of large extras.
The 4 versus 8 question: both figures are real but apply to different things. Curbside piles are capped at 8 cubic yards; the 4-cubic-yard figure is the Bulky Waste Collection Center limit per visit and the size tier in the out-of-cycle fee schedule. Curbside furniture is not capped at 4 cubic yards.
What the City does not publish: a per-street pickup day. The published window is the collection week, the pile has to be ready by 7 a.m. Monday, and the truck passes once. If you need the pile gone on a specific date, the curbside route is the wrong tool — book an out-of-cycle collection or a hauler instead.
If You Cannot Wait — Out-of-Cycle Collection (Paid)
Extra brush or bulky collection is available by request online through the City customer portal or by calling 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000: $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 for each additional 4 cubic yards or portion.
No furniture-specific City fee appears in the published schedule — a sofa is billed as a bulky item like anything else in that class. Confirm the current fee when you book.
The Four Free Bulky Waste Collection Centers (Self-Haul)
Year-round, and usually the fastest answer for a single sofa.
- Bitters — 1800 Wurzbach Parkway, 78216 (entrance from Jones Maltsberger Road at Wurzbach Parkway)
- Frio City Road — 1531 Frio City Road, 78226
- Culebra — 7030 Culebra Road, 78238
- Rigsby Road — 2755 Rigsby Road, 78222
Hours: Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m. (excluding holidays).
Required: residential customers only; a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID. There is no additional charge for environmental-fee payers. The limit is 4 cubic yards of bulky items per visit, plus up to 1 cubic yard of construction debris; no household trash and no commercial-hauler loads; truck loads must not exceed the bed's fender wall; and the customer unloads at the site. Cover the load with a tarp — the Tarp Law (City Code Chapter 14, Sec. 18) carries a $5 penalty at City disposal and processing centers.
The center list is not the curbside list. The centers add auto parts, flattened cardboard, glass and mirrors, sinks, tubs and counter tops, and up to 1 cubic yard of construction material and lumber. They refuse bagged garbage, bed linens, boards longer than 10 feet, brush and yard waste, clothes, hazardous material, mattresses with blood stains or bed bugs, soiled couch cushions with blood or bed bugs, railroad ties, soil, rocks and concrete, Styrofoam, unbagged insulation and the 275-gallon rebottled IBC tote.
Two boundaries worth knowing before you load:
- Electronics. Up to 3 TVs are accepted curbside as bulky items, and the bulky centers and HHW facility take e-waste — route electronics separately rather than burying them in an upholstered pile.
- Stained or infested upholstery. The bulky centers explicitly refuse mattresses with blood stains or bed bugs and soiled couch cushions with blood or bed bugs. The curbside accepted list carries no condition wording, so treat the center rule as the conservative standard and do not set out infested or soiled upholstery for curbside pickup. See the mattress guide at /tx/san-antonio/mattress-disposal/ for that item's full rules.
Free Landfill Day (Quarterly, Date-Sensitive)
Quarterly Free Landfill Days let City of San Antonio solid waste fee rate payers dispose of material free with a valid picture ID and a recent CPS Energy statement showing payment of the City Services solid waste fee. Sites are Republic Services Landfill, 7000 IH 10 E, 78219 and Waste Management Landfill, 8611 Covel Road, 78252 (a safety vest may be required at the WM site). Contractor, commercial and industrial waste are not covered.
The City's page points readers to donation for usable items and to the four bulky centers as the year-round alternative. Free Landfill Days are quarterly and the date moves — no date is published here. Get the current one from the live page or 3-1-1 before you load.
Donate Usable Furniture First
The City encourages donating usable items, and for furniture in decent shape this is usually the cheapest and quickest answer. Terms are time-sensitive, so confirm acceptance before setting anything aside, and never count on a pickup you have not booked.
Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio accepts new and gently used residential furniture — tables, sofas and chairs, china cabinets and sideboards, bookcases, bed frames, nightstands and dressers — with no tears, pet stains, marks or hair, no missing pieces, no smell or smoke damage, and no discoloration or peeling. It does not accept mattresses and box springs, used sleeper sofas or futons, TV armoires, cabinets or entertainment centers, commercial office furniture, cribs, playpens or highchairs, or pianos. Free pickup can be reserved online; car-sized items can be dropped at the Home Centers — 311 Probandt, 78204 (210-223-3647); 5482 Walzem Rd, 78218 (210-599-7109); 8125 Meadow Leaf, 78227 (210-674-7500) — Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Sunday. The organization advises calling for guidance first.
Goodwill San Antonio accepts gently used furniture in clean, sellable condition and offers a free home pickup for gently used furniture and bulky household goods in San Antonio and select nearby areas. It does not accept mattresses or box springs, sleeper sofas or pull-out beds, refrigerators or water heaters, baby furniture, CRT monitors or tube TVs, tires, rims or auto parts, batteries, construction materials, or guns and ammunition. Contacts: 210-924-8581 or 800-483-9455.
The Salvation Army schedules pickup by ZIP code at satruck.org, 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825). Availability for a San Antonio address is ZIP-dependent — enter your ZIP and confirm before counting on it.
The HHW Drop-Off Is Not a Furniture Route
The Household Hazardous Waste facility at 7030 Culebra Road, 78238 takes chemicals and e-waste only. Furniture, mattresses and appliances are not accepted there, and HHW must never go in a cart. Hours are Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m., except holidays. A monthly event runs the first Friday and the next-day Saturday, 8 a.m.–12 p.m., at the Bitters center, 1800 Wurzbach Parkway, 78216, and quarterly events are held at 2755 Rigsby Avenue, 78222; all are free.
Requirements: a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, contents in original containers, no mixing, a 220-pound limit, and paint or liquid waste limited to five 5-gallon cans or 25 1-gallon cans. What does belong there from a furniture cleanout: paint, cleaners and solvents, motor oil and auto fluids, batteries, cooking oil, pool chemicals, pesticides, fluorescent fixtures and ballasts, furniture polish and lacquer, printer cartridges and e-waste. Keep all of it out of the furniture pile. See the paint guide at /tx/san-antonio/paint-disposal/ and the e-waste guide at /tx/san-antonio/ewaste-disposal/.
Community Collections / Dial-A-Trailer (Neighborhood Program)
Dial-A-Trailer stations a truck or container at a neighborhood site on a designated Saturday, 8 a.m.–1 p.m., and accepts furniture, appliances, mattresses, metals and up to 4 tires. It is a group program, not a household pickup: four reservations per Saturday citywide, one unit per cleanup, organizations limited to two events per calendar year, city limits only. Schedule at 210-207-6428. Bricks, commercial waste, concrete, construction and remodeling materials, hazardous waste, railroad ties, and soil or sod are not accepted.
If you are clearing one house, this is not your route. If your block association or church is organizing a cleanup, it is a strong one.
Paid Options — City-Permitted Private Haulers
Private haulers must hold a City Commercial Solid Waste Hauler Vehicle Permit — $150 per year for vehicles 6,999 lbs GVW or less and $2,250 per year for 7,000 lbs or more. The City publishes an Official Online Waste Hauler List (FY2026) with permitted companies, their phone numbers and the waste types they accept.
The City publishes no hauler prices. That list changes with each fiscal year, so re-verify any company name or number against the live document before you call, and treat contact details from other sources as unconfirmed. Get a written quote and ask what the provider will and will not take; compare it against the free curbside and free self-haul routes first.
Retailer Haul-Away Is Not a Furniture Route
Retailer haul-away programs — Best Buy's, for example — cover electronics and major appliances only, and haul-away is tied to the delivery of a replacement purchase. Best Buy does not accept furniture, and its published pricing is inconsistent across its own pages, so no figure is quoted here. Do not plan a sofa removal around a retailer program.
Apartment and Renter Edge Cases
If you rent, the honest answer for most large complexes is: not established — confirm before you move anything.
A December 9, 2010 City ordinance requires multi-family properties to provide recycling services to occupants, and properties — not the City — secure their own collection services. Only a "small multi-family property" may be eligible to pay for and receive City collection services. Eligibility otherwise runs with the CPS Energy account that pays the solid waste fee, so a tenant whose complex is served under a different account or arrangement may not be able to schedule curbside bulky pickup directly.
- Ask the property manager or leasing office first. Under the multi-family rules, management must tell residents where containers are and what is accepted, so they are the right first contact for getting rid of furniture from a unit. Then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).
- Do not use the community dumpster, compactor area or alley. If the building's hauling contract does not cover bulky items, an oversized or unreported set-out creates exposure for you and the property; the City provides an illegal-dumping report channel through 3-1-1.
- Confirmed renter-friendly routes: donate usable furniture (Goodwill's free home pickup, Habitat's free pickup booking, Salvation Army by ZIP), or self-haul to a bulky center with a recent CPS Energy bill showing the Environmental Fee plus photo ID if you have the account documentation and a vehicle.
- Not donatable? A City-permitted private hauler is the standard apartment route; the City publishes the permitted list but no prices, so get quotes directly.
- Chemicals found while clearing a unit — paint, cleaners, batteries, motor oil — go to the HHW center at 7030 Culebra Road, not the curb or the dumpster.
- In a Bexar County suburb or the unincorporated county? You are outside the City program; check your own city's or the county's provider.
Prepare the Piece Before It Leaves the House
- Confirm your status — your address must be in the SWMD service area, gated by the CPS Energy account billed the City services fee plus the Environmental Fee.
- Look up your collection week at gis.sanantonio.gov/swmd/mycollectionday or 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 — never assume a citywide date.
- Wait for the door hanger before setting anything out.
- Empty it. Remove loose contents and empty drawers, cabinets and cushion storage so a two-person crew can lift the piece.
- Strip the hazards. Remove protruding nails, broken glass and loose hardware before the item reaches the curb or a truck.
- Check the size. Stay within 8 cubic yards and within 8 feet of the curb, at the curb even if your garbage is alley-serviced.
- Separate materials. Bulky items do not go in a brush pile, and brush does not go in a bulky pile.
- Route chemicals and e-waste elsewhere — HHW center, never the furniture pile.
- Self-hauling? Bring the CPS Energy bill showing the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, cap the load at 4 cubic yards of bulky items (1 cubic yard of construction debris), stay within the truck bed's fender wall, tarp the load, and unload it yourself.
- Donating? Clean the item, confirm it is complete and sound, check the organization's current accepted-items list, and book ahead — expect a lead time.
- Hiring a hauler? Re-verify the company against the City's current permitted-hauler list and get a written quote.
Safety Warnings
- Lift with help. Sofas, dressers and mattresses are heavy and awkward, and stairs are where injuries happen. Use a two-person lift or a dolly — never move a large piece alone on stairs.
- Remove or tape sharp edges — protruding nails, staples, broken glass and loose hardware — before the item goes out or is loaded.
- Keep glass and mirrors out of a curbside pile; they are on the curbside unaccepted list and are accepted only at the bulky drop-off centers.
- Place items only at the curb, within 8 feet of it, clear of parked cars, low tree limbs, water meters, sidewalks and vacant lots.
- Never mix hazardous waste in. Paint, cleaners, motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides and batteries stay in original labeled containers for the HHW center.
- Never bury electronics, TVs or appliances in an upholstered pile.
- Never stage a donation at the curb before a charity confirms pickup — an uncollected set-out outside the door-hanger window is a violation risk.
- Tarp and secure self-hauled loads so nothing shifts or falls onto the road.
- Never put furniture in a community dumpster, compactor area or alley, and never move a large piece alone on stairs to meet a deadline.
Verify Before You Act
- Confirm your address is in the SWMD service area and that the CPS Energy account billed the City services fee covers your address.
- Confirm your address-specific collection week at gis.sanantonio.gov/swmd/mycollectionday or 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000; do not assume a date.
- Wait for the door hanger, and treat the hanger date as the set-out date, not the collection day.
- Check the live Curbside Brush & Bulky page for the current pile limit and placement rules before you set out.
- Self-hauling? Confirm center hours, the 4-cubic-yard limit and your document set, and tarp the load.
- Rule out the wrong doors: the HHW facility at 7030 Culebra Road takes chemicals and e-waste only, and retailer haul-away does not take furniture.
- Need it gone sooner? Confirm the current out-of-cycle fee and how to book it. Checking Free Landfill Day? Verify the live date and site rules first.
- Donating? Confirm current accepted items and pickup availability with the organization — never assume a pickup.
- Renting? Ask the property manager, then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).
- Hiring a hauler? Re-verify the company against the City's current permitted-hauler list and get a written quote; the City publishes no prices.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking curbside furniture is capped at 4 cubic yards — curbside is 8; the bulky centers and the out-of-cycle tier are the ones at 4.
- Setting a pile out before the door hanger arrives, leaving it out after crews pass, or treating the hanger date as the collection day.
- Stacking furniture in front of a parked car, under low limbs, on a water meter or on a vacant lot.
- Mixing brush, construction debris, glass and mirrors, or hazardous waste into a bulky pile.
- Taking a sofa to the HHW drop-off at 7030 Culebra Road, which takes chemicals and e-waste only.
- Assuming the curbside and bulky-center accepted lists are the same. They are not.
- Expecting a retailer to haul the sofa away with a new purchase — retail haul-away is appliances and electronics only.
- Leaving furniture in a community dumpster, compactor area or alley, or assuming an apartment building or a Bexar County suburb follows the City's rules.
- Expecting a charity pickup that was never booked, or staging donation items at the curb to wait.
- Setting out an infested or heavily soiled upholstered item and assuming curbside will take it — the bulky centers refuse those outright.
FAQ
Will San Antonio pick up my old sofa, couch or dresser at the curb? Yes, if your address is in the SWMD service area and the CPS Energy account billed the City services fee covers it. Household furniture is an accepted bulky item in the twice-yearly collection, within an 8-cubic-yard pile. Confirm your collection week first.
Do I need an appointment? No. The collection runs on your assigned week; wait for the door hanger, set the pile out when the hanger says to, and have it ready by 7 a.m. the Monday of that week. An appointment is only needed for an out-of-cycle collection, and the bulky centers are not appointment-based.
How big can the pile be, and where does it go? No more than 8 cubic yards, within 8 feet of the curb, at the curb in front of the house even if your garbage is alley-serviced, and clear of parked cars, low limbs, water meters and vacant lots.
Is the limit 4 cubic yards or 8? Both are real but apply to different things: 8 cubic yards is the curbside pile cap; 4 cubic yards is the bulky-center limit per visit and the out-of-cycle fee tier.
I cannot wait — what does an extra pickup cost? $50 for one item or up to 4 cubic yards, plus $25 for each additional 4 cubic yards or portion, requested online or via 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000. No furniture-specific City fee is published.
Where can I drop furniture off for free, and when? The four Bulky Waste Collection Centers — Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra and Rigsby Road — Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m., for residential customers with a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee plus photo ID, limited to 4 cubic yards of bulky items per visit. You unload at the site.
Will the HHW center at 7030 Culebra Road take my old couch or mattress? No. It takes chemicals and e-waste only — furniture, mattresses and appliances are not accepted. Route the cleaners, paint, batteries and motor oil from your cleanout there instead.
Can I take furniture to Free Landfill Day instead? Yes, if you are a City solid waste fee rate payer with a valid picture ID and a recent CPS Energy statement showing payment of the City Services solid waste fee. The sites are Republic Services Landfill (7000 IH 10 E) and Waste Management Landfill (8611 Covel Road). Check the live page or 3-1-1 for the current quarterly date.
I rent an apartment. Can I use the City's curbside furniture pickup? Not established. Multi-family properties secure their own hauling under the City's Chapter 14 multi-family rules, and only a small multi-family property may be eligible to pay for and receive City service. No City page states whether tenants of large complexes get curbside bulky collection. Ask your property manager first, then confirm with 3-1-1 / 210-207-6000 (multi-family programs 210-207-6460).
Can I donate or sell it instead? Yes, and the City encourages donation. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio takes gently used residential furniture under condition rules and books free pickups; Goodwill San Antonio takes gently used furniture and offers free home pickup in San Antonio and select nearby areas; The Salvation Army schedules pickup by ZIP at satruck.org. Mattresses and box springs are excluded by both Habitat and Goodwill, along with sleeper sofas, entertainment centers, office furniture, cribs and pianos. Confirm current terms and availability — never assume a pickup.
What will a private hauler or junk-removal company charge? Unknown — the City publishes a permitted-hauler list with phone numbers and waste types but no prices. Get a written quote and confirm what the provider will and will not take.
What does NOT belong in a furniture set-out? Brush, leaves and yard waste; concrete; construction and demolition material; glass and mirrors (curb only); household hazardous waste; roofing material; and soil and rocks. Glass and mirrors and up to 1 cubic yard of construction material and lumber are accepted only at the bulky centers, not at the curb.
Does any state rule change this? No. Texas has no state-run furniture disposal program — disposal is local. TCEQ regulates household hazardous waste programs and keeps a list of local options, and household-generated chemical waste is not required to be handled as hazardous waste under TCEQ guidance, but the City's own rules govern a San Antonio address.
