Quick answer

If you live inside the City of Los Angeles and your trash is collected by LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN), a couch, dresser, table, chair or shelving unit leaves for free. What surprises most people is the order of operations: the city's own instructions do not begin with a pickup request. They begin with donation. Get that sequence right and clearing a room costs nothing and takes one app request or one phone call.

For a residential address inside the City of Los Angeles that receives LASAN curbside collection:

  • Furniture is accepted free at the curb. LASAN describes free unlimited curbside bulky item collection at no additional charge. The accepted list includes furniture (couches, tables, chairs), mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, carpet (rolled and tied), large wood pieces or doors, and electronic waste.
  • No item cap applies. Vague per-quarter, per-year and per-request limits circulate on third-party sites; none of them appear in the city's own service description. Do not plan around a cap that the city does not publish.
  • Donation comes first in the city's framing. LASAN asks residents to think about donating furniture and appliances in good shape to a local thrift store, a charity or a community exchange app before scheduling a pickup.
  • Schedule at least one business day before your normal trash day, and the pickup happens on that regular trash day. Three channels: the Online Service Request Form, the MyLA311 app, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.
  • Bring an itemized list — "one couch, two chairs, and a table." Drivers work from the list, so a vague request sends the wrong truck.
  • Online requests take about two days to process, so don't start this the night before a move-out.
  • S.A.F.E. Centers are the wrong door for furniture. They accept household hazardous waste and e-waste only and explicitly exclude bulky items such as furniture and large appliances.

Are you actually in the City of LA service area?

This is the gate that decides whether anything else in this guide applies to you.

Free curbside furniture pickup is a City of Los Angeles service. It covers properties inside the city limits that receive LASAN curbside collection — single-family homes and small multi-family buildings of one to four units, whether you rent or own.

It does not cover:

  • Unincorporated LA County addresses. Those follow the hauler listed on your bill or cart. Most County haulers serving residential areas, Garbage Disposal Districts and Residential Franchise areas do offer free bulky item pickup for furniture, mattresses and appliances, but some limit how many pickups you get per year. County household hazardous waste questions go to (888) CLEAN-LA or CleanLA.com.
  • Neighboring independent cities. Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Inglewood, Torrance and Long Beach each run their own waste program with their own rules and fees. They are not LASAN-served.
  • Buildings of five or more units inside the city, where pickup runs through LASAN's appointment-based multi-family process — covered further down.

Your mailing address does not settle this. Plenty of addresses that read "Los Angeles, CA" sit outside the city limits, and the 1-800-773-2489 line answers calls from anywhere, so reaching a person is not proof a truck is coming to your address. Confirm first with the official bulky item pickup page, the MyLA311 address lookup, or the Customer Care Center.

Donation first: what LASAN asks you to try before any pickup

Donation is not a loophole the city tolerates — it is the first step LASAN promotes. The bulky item hub asks residents to think about donating furniture and appliances in good shape to a local thrift store, a charity or a community exchange app before scheduling a pickup, and the department's bulky item pages state plainly that it always suggests recycling bulky items through charitable organizations, thrift stores and exchange apps.

Three verified donation routes, with their real limits:

Habitat for Humanity Greater LA ReStore. Accepts furniture, including upholstered furniture, but not items with broken or missing pieces — and not items showing stains, wear, tear, discoloration, pet hair or patterns. It cannot take box springs, mattresses, carpet or carpet padding. Schedule a pickup online or by phone at (424) 246-3637; ReStore drop-off locations are in Bellflower, Torrance and at 1071 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles. A $25 fuel donation per pickup is suggested, and items should be at ground level.

The Salvation Army. Schedules furniture and household-goods pickups by ZIP code through satruck.org or the national line 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825). Condition rules and local availability vary by ZIP, so confirm for your address before hauling anything to the curb for them.

Goodwill Southern California. Accepts furniture and household goods at more than 80 retail stores and 40-plus staffed donation centers, and states plainly that it does not offer pickup service. Drop-off only. This corrects the widespread claim that Goodwill will collect a sofa from your home.

Community exchange apps are the third route the city names. The practical test is the same everywhere: if the piece is clean, complete and usable, it belongs in a donation or exchange channel; if it is stained, torn, pet-damaged, missing drawers, or a bare mattress, it belongs in the curbside route. Condition decides the door — not convenience.

Which furniture is accepted curbside — and what is prohibited

Worth knowing up front: LASAN does not publish a furniture-specific disposal page. Furniture is one category inside the generic bulky item program. That means any furniture-only cap, furniture-only fee or furniture-only drop-off rule you read elsewhere has no official basis.

Accepted at curbside bulky pickup:

  • Furniture: couches, tables, chairs
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Toilets and sinks
  • Carpet — must be rolled and tied
  • Large wood pieces or doors
  • Electronic waste: TVs, computers, monitors

Prohibited at the curb:

  • Automotive parts or used oil
  • Construction materials: concrete, bricks, dirt
  • Commercial appliances
  • Paints, solvents or chemicals
  • Medicines or needles
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Cardboard, unless a Move In/Move Out service is scheduled

Two of those matter during a furniture clear-out. E-waste from the same room — the old TV, the monitor — is accepted curbside, but paint, solvents, chemicals, needles and fluorescent tubes are not; those go to a S.A.F.E. Center (more on that below, and see the Los Angeles e-waste disposal guide for the electronics side). Construction debris from a remodel is also a different problem from an old dresser: LASAN does not collect it.

How to schedule free curbside furniture pickup

Three official channels:

  1. The Online Service Request Form on LASAN's bulky item pickup page.
  2. The MyLA311 mobile app or web portal.
  3. The 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.

Notice. Notify LASAN at least one business day before your regular trash collection day; the pickup happens on that day. Online service requests take about two days to process, so the app is not a same-day shortcut. Working toward a move-out date? Count backwards from your trash day and leave room for those two days.

Itemized list. Name each item specifically. Drivers collect what is on the work order, so "one couch, two chairs, and a table" gets the right truck routed while "some furniture" does not. Keep the confirmation or work-order number so you can follow up if something is missed.

Curbside prep: set-out rules that decide whether your furniture is collected

  • Set furniture at the curb on your normal collection day, separate from your regular trash, recycling and organics bins.
  • Roll and tie carpet. Carpet is accepted, but only when rolled and tied.
  • Keep prohibited items off the curb. If a piece of furniture is stacked with paint cans, construction debris or a fluorescent tube, the load can be refused.
  • Place items curbside only after a pickup is scheduled. Unscheduled bulky items left on the street can be treated as illegal dumping, which is a citation risk — not a free removal you got away with.
  • For donation pickups, clean the item and place it at ground level where you can, because charity drivers may refuse items based on condition or current inventory.
  • Handle heavy pieces safely. A dresser or hide-a-bed needs two people, and glass, protruding hardware and exposed staples are the usual injuries on a clear-out day. Keep walkways and driveways clear while items wait.

Free monthly drop-off events: 2026 dates and five locations

LASAN runs free bulky item drop-off events at five locations, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on set Saturdays.

2026 dates: January 10 · February 14 · March 14 · April 11 · May 9 · June 13 · July 11 · August 8 · September 19 · October 10 · November 21 · December 12

Locations:

  • East Valley — 11050 Pendelton St., Sun Valley 91352
  • West Valley — 8840 Vanalden Ave., Northridge 91234
  • Harbor — 1400 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro 90731
  • West LA — 2027 Stoner Ave., Los Angeles 90025
  • Central LA — 2201 E. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles 90021

Furniture appears on the published drop-off item list, alongside carpet, yard trimmings, shelving and wood. The dates, hours and locations are confirmed.

One caution before you load a truck. Not every item appears on every official list: mattresses and appliances are accepted at the curb but are not confirmed for the drop-off events, so furniture, carpet, yard trimmings, shelving and wood are the items to count on. Vehicle limits and proof-of-residency requirements (such as a utility bill plus state ID) circulate in event listings but are not confirmed by an official source. Confirm the accepted items and any vehicle or residency rule with LASAN before you drive across the city.

Apartments, renters and buildings of five or more units

Multi-family housing changes who you call, not whether you qualify.

Buildings of five or more units. LASAN collects large and bulky household items, including furniture, from residents of 5-plus-unit buildings by appointment through the Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list provided when you schedule. Tenants typically coordinate the set-out with building management.

The Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee. In 5-plus-unit buildings whose hauling comes from a recycLA Service Provider — meaning the property does not pay trash fees directly to LASAN — a Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee appears on the LADWP bill. A rate adjustment ordinance was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in October 2025 and implemented in November 2025, and the fee funds unlimited on-demand bulky pickup for those buildings. Official material also describes relief: a potential 31.25% discount for low-income customers under this fee and a possible 100% exemption for Lifeline customers, with existing Lifeline or EZ-SAVE enrollees switched automatically and no re-application needed. Applicants contact LADWP and may enroll in only one program. No dollar rates are published here, because the official rate table is not available on the pages reviewed — ask LADWP or email sansrfrates2025@lacity.org for what applies to your property.

Who actually schedules it. In a 5-plus-unit building the honest answer is often "not you." Management frequently controls set-out logistics and the hauler relationship. recycLA serves more than 66,000 commercial and multi-family customers, with haulers including Athens Services, CalMet Services, NASA Services, Republic Services, Universal Waste Systems and Waste Management — and which hauler serves your building shapes the arrangement. Ask management how furniture leaves the property before you promise anyone a pickup date.

Small multi-family (one to four units). LASAN-served: use the standard free curbside bulky pickup, not the appointment process.

Renters vacating a unit. Do not leave furniture at the curb without a scheduled pickup — illegal dumping rules apply, and the curb is not a free storage solution during a move. Allow for the roughly two-day online processing window before your move-out deadline.

Renters and the bill. Confirm with the account holder whether the property is separately or master metered, since that affects how the Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee shows up, and whether you as a tenant can act on it at all.

Outside the city. An apartment in unincorporated County territory or a neighboring city is not LASAN-served; the renter must use that address's hauler or city program.

S.A.F.E. Centers, e-waste, and the wrong-door rule

This is the single most common misroute, so it is worth stating plainly: S.A.F.E. Centers do not take furniture.

S.A.F.E. Centers (Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics) provide free household hazardous waste and e-waste drop-off for City of LA and LA County residents. Most are open Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a disposal limit of up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Their official "not accepted" list excludes bulky items such as furniture and large appliances. Furniture goes through curbside bulky pickup or the monthly drop-off events — never to a S.A.F.E. Center.

Status is time-sensitive. The Washington Boulevard and UCLA S.A.F.E. Centers are currently listed as temporarily closed, some centers run Saturday-only schedules, and there is a winter closure from December 24 to January 3. Centers may also close or modify hours in inclement weather, so re-verify before you drive.

The split-room problem. If you are clearing an apartment, the couch and the paint cans in the same closet follow different routes: furniture to the curb or a drop-off event, paints, solvents, chemicals, medicines, needles and fluorescent tubes to a S.A.F.E. Center or a mobile collection event. Free mobile collection events are also offered for City and County residents, with the same 15-gallon or 125-pound per-visit limit. Don't mix the loads. Paid alternatives — real options, prices to request

Private junk removal and retailer haul-away are legitimate choices for tight timelines, stairwells with no access, or items no free or donation route will take. But no vendor price is published here, so no dollar figures appear. Request quotes, ask what is included, and confirm how the hauler disposes of what it takes.

Retailer take-back is narrower than people expect. IKEA Buyback & Resell is a real program, but it is limited to participating stores, restricted to IKEA Family or IKEA Business Network members, requires IKEA-brand furniture fully assembled and dropped off at the store, and pays in IKEA Refund Card store credit. IKEA's own terms exclude upholstered and leather products, which means sofas and armchairs — the most common furniture disposal problem in Los Angeles — are not eligible. Program participation varies by store.

One genuinely useful adjacent rule: California law requires all mattress retailers, including online sellers, to offer free take-back of used residential mattresses and box springs when they deliver new mattress units. If a new bed is arriving, the old one can leave with the delivery.

Official verification checklist

  1. Confirm you are inside the City of LA / LASAN curbside service area via the official bulky item pickup page, the MyLA311 address lookup, or 1-800-773-2489.
  2. Confirm your regular trash collection day — bulky pickup lands on it, and you must request at least one business day ahead.
  3. Confirm your furniture is on the accepted list and that none of your items are prohibited.
  4. Build the itemized list before scheduling and keep the confirmation or work-order number.
  5. Schedule through the Online Service Request Form, the MyLA311 app, or 1-800-773-2489 — and allow about two days for an online request to process.
  6. Prep the set-out: curb placement on collection day, separate from bins, carpet rolled and tied, items placed curbside only after the pickup is scheduled.
  7. In a building of five or more units, confirm with management who schedules pickup and whether the Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee applies to the property.
  8. Ask LADWP about the low-income discount or the Lifeline/EZ-SAVE exemption, or email sansrfrates2025@lacity.org — no dollar figure should be expected from this guide.
  9. Before loading a vehicle for a drop-off event, re-verify the date, location, hours, accepted items, and any residency or vehicle rules with LASAN.
  10. Confirm donation pickup terms before relying on them: Habitat LA ReStore at (424) 246-3637 or online, Salvation Army at satruck.org or 1-800-SA-TRUCK, Goodwill drop-off only.
  11. Route paints, solvents, chemicals, medicines, needles, fluorescent lights and e-waste from a furniture project to a S.A.F.E. Center or mobile collection event — never to a furniture pickup, and never furniture to a S.A.F.E. Center.

Frequently asked questions

Does Los Angeles charge for furniture pickup? No. LASAN's curbside bulky item service is documented as free and unlimited at no additional charge for residents with LASAN curbside collection. The Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee is a separate property-level charge in 5-plus-unit buildings served by a recycLA hauler that don't pay trash fees directly to LASAN.

Is there a limit on how much furniture I can put out? The official service description states free unlimited curbside bulky item collection at no additional charge. Other sites circulate specific quarterly, annual and per-request item caps; none of those limits appear in LASAN's own service description, so don't plan around them.

How far ahead do I schedule? At least one business day before your regular trash collection day. Collection happens on your normal trash day. Online service requests take about two days to process.

Can I put a couch out on the sidewalk and hope it disappears? You can, but placing bulky items curbside only after a scheduled pickup is the rule, and unscheduled items on the street can be treated as illegal dumping. Schedule first.

Will Goodwill pick up my couch? No. Goodwill Southern California accepts furniture at its stores and staffed donation centers but states it does not offer pickup service. For pickup, try Habitat LA ReStore at (424) 246-3637 or The Salvation Army at 1-800-SA-TRUCK.

Can I take furniture to a S.A.F.E. Center? No. S.A.F.E. Centers accept household hazardous waste and e-waste only and explicitly list bulky items such as furniture and large appliances as not accepted. Use curbside bulky pickup or a monthly drop-off event.

I live in an apartment. Can I schedule pickup myself? In a building of fewer than five units, use the standard free curbside channels. In a building of five or more units, collection runs through appointment-based multi-family service at 1-800-773-2489 with an itemized list — and check with management first, because they often coordinate it for the property.

What if I'm outside the City of LA? Unincorporated County addresses and neighboring cities such as Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Inglewood, Torrance and Long Beach are not LASAN-served. County residents call the hauler on their bill; neighboring-city residents use their own city program.

Does IKEA buy back my sofa? IKEA Buyback & Resell excludes upholstered and leather products, sofas and armchairs. It covers eligible IKEA-brand hard furniture at participating stores for members, paid in store credit as drop-off only.

Do mattresses and appliances go to the free drop-off events? They are accepted at the curb, but they are not confirmed for the monthly drop-off events — the published drop-off list covers furniture, carpet, yard trimmings, shelving and wood. Treat the curbside route as the safe path for a mattress or an appliance, and confirm with LASAN before self-hauling one.
