Quick answer
If you live in the City of San Diego and have a couch, dresser, table, desk, bed frame or cabinet to get rid of, nothing is coming to your curb. The City states plainly that it "does not provide bulky item pickup or curbside pick-up services," and furniture can never go in a City trash, recycling or organics bin.
Your real choices are three:
- Donate it if it is clean and complete — Goodwill Industries of San Diego County takes large furniture at its retail stores and donation storefronts, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes functioning, complete furniture with a free pickup or a paid priority pickup.
- Drop mattresses and box springs separately, free, at the City's Mattress Collection Site, 5161 Convoy St. That site does not take household furniture.
- Self-haul everything else to the Miramar Landfill, 5180 Convoy St. A car, pickup, van, SUV or minivan pays a Tier 1 flat $75 per load for City-generated waste ($86 for non-City waste).
A bulky-item pickup program was planned, but after the June 2026 fee reductions it is paused until further notice. Regular trash, recycling and organics collection continues.

What actually happens to furniture in San Diego
Neighboring cities do run bulky-item pickups, and several national sites still describe one for San Diego. The City's own documents say otherwise.
A City press release dated June 8, 2026 states that the approved trash-fee reductions "eliminate funding for several planned service enhancements, including weekly recycling collection and bulky item pickup." The City's Trash Service Updates FAQ calls both enhancements "paused until further notice," while regular trash, recycling and organics collection continues. City materials had referenced a possible July 1, 2027 start date for bulky pickup; that date belongs to a paused plan, not a service you can book today. Treat any page promising a free annual San Diego bulky pickup, or a per-item curbside furniture fee, as contradicting the City's published pages.
The bin rule is separate and firm. The General Refuse rules list "furniture, appliances or auto parts (water heaters, major appliances, couches/chairs, car bumpers, fenders, engine blocks, batteries, items over 50 pounds)" among the items that can never go in a City trash, recycling or organic waste container. City collection is automated and collects City-issued containers only. Setting a nightstand at the curb does not create a pickup — it creates an item that sits there, and potentially an illegal-dumping problem.
First, check that you are in the City of San Diego service area
The City's Environmental Services Department serves roughly 225,000 eligible residential customers: single-family homes and multi-family properties with up to four residences on a lot. Trash is weekly, organics weekly, recycling every other week.
Not eligible: buildings with five or more residences on a lot, mixed-use and commercial properties, and properties on private streets or inside gated communities. Those must subscribe to a City-approved private Franchise Hauler; the City does not assign haulers or set those rates.
Two consequences follow. First, even inside the service area there is no furniture pickup — eligibility decides who owns your bulky-item decision, not whether a truck comes. If your building is privately serviced, the hauler or property manager decides. Second, a "San Diego" address is not proof of jurisdiction: unincorporated San Diego County and other cities such as Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Del Mar, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista each run their own program with their own hauler. The Miramar gate is one physical site for everyone, but eligibility, price and available alternatives differ by jurisdiction.
Donation routes: Goodwill, Habitat ReStore and WasteFreeSD
For clean, complete, still-usable furniture, donation is usually the cheapest and fastest answer.
Goodwill Industries of San Diego County takes large furniture at its retail stores and donation storefronts. It does not accept mattresses (those are routed to the Bye Bye Mattress program) or ripped, stained and unsellable furniture. Check each location listing before you load — not every countywide donation center takes the same categories. Donation questions: (619) 225-2200 ext. 197 or donate@sdgoodwill.org, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
San Diego Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes furniture, home decor, appliances, cabinets and building materials that are functioning, complete and in good condition. Two pickup tiers:
- Standard ReStore pickup — free, roughly a 2-to-3-week wait; retrieves from the curb or a ground-floor garage only; no disassembly.
- Priority pickup through partner ReSupply — a nominal fee (the amount is not published), as soon as 2 business days, from anywhere in the home, any condition, with disassembly.
Confirm space and condition rules with dispatch@sandiegohabitat.org or (619) 241-2221. Habitat's headquarters is 8128 Mercury Court, San Diego, CA 92111; main line (619) 283-HOME (4663), Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WasteFreeSD.org is the City-recommended reuse directory, maintained by I Love A Clean San Diego with the City as a listed partner, with more than 1,700 listings for household items, recyclables and hazardous waste. Treat each listing as a third-party operator and call before loading.
Retailer take-back is limited. IKEA US runs a Buy Back & Resell program for specific assembled, functional IKEA products for store credit — but it excludes mattresses, beds and bed frames and most upholstered categories, and San Diego-area store participation was not verified. Do not treat it as a guaranteed local route.
Which furniture disposal route should you use?
| Route | Eligibility | Cost | Appointment | Accepts furniture | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| City curbside / bulky pickup | Does not exist; planned program paused | Not applicable | No — nothing to schedule | No | None possible | Nobody |

| Private franchise hauler pickup | 5+ units, mixed-use/commercial, private streets, gated | Commercial pricing, not published | Yes, via manager or hauler | Hauler-dependent | Low when management arranges it | Renters in privately serviced buildings |
| Paid on-demand removal | Open market, not a City program | Market rate, not published | Yes | Typically yes | Lowest | Readers who cannot self-haul |
| Household Hazardous Waste facility | City residents only, appointment only | Free for accepted items | Yes | No — not hazardous waste | Mid | Paint, cleaners, oil, batteries |
| Retailer take-back (IKEA Buy Back) | IKEA Family members; specific assembled IKEA products | Store credit, value not published | Yes | Limited — excludes mattresses, beds/frames, most upholstered items | Low-to-mid | A few flat-pack IKEA items; local participation not verified |
Notes: the Mattress Collection Site takes mattresses and box springs only; furniture acceptance at the Miramar Recycling Center is unconfirmed and must be checked by phone; San Diego-area IKEA buy-back participation was not verified. No private hauler, ReSupply or junk-removal rate is published anywhere, so no amount is given here.
Self-haul: Miramar Landfill fees, hours and tarp rules
Miramar Landfill, 5180 Convoy St., is the City's only active landfill and the main disposal route for furniture that cannot be donated.
Hours: Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; self-dumping vehicles accepted until 4:30 p.m.; closed Sundays and six City holidays; no hand unloads after 4 p.m.
Cost: Fees depend on vehicle type, waste type, net weight and whether the waste was generated within the City. Under the schedule effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the Tier 1 flat rate for general refuse is $75 per load for City waste and $86 for non-City waste. Tier 1 covers cars, sedans, station wagons, crossovers, SUVs, minivans, pickups and vans, plus trailers up to 5 feet wide by 9 feet long by 4 feet high. It applies to loads under 1 ton and includes a $15 recycling fee and the $8 Refuse Collector Business Tax. Heavier loads move to a higher tier or weighed rates, so confirm the charge on the day.
Rules that catch people out:
- Cover the load. The uncovered-load fee is $50, and loose furniture is a road hazard.
- Cash is not accepted. Pay by check, credit or debit; checks go to the City Treasurer, with a $25 returned-check penalty.
- Sort banned items out first. CRTs, TVs, appliances, universal waste, electronic waste and household hazardous materials must be disposed of before entering the landfill and cannot ride inside a general refuse load.
- Non-City waste pays more, and the landfill may refuse it.
Because disposal is priced per load rather than per item, consolidating a clean-out into one covered trip keeps costs predictable.
Miramar Recycling Center: what it prices, and the furniture caveat
The Miramar Recycling Center at 5165 Convoy St., 92111 — a different site from the landfill — is open Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed six holidays. Published fees: $25 each for refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners (CFC appliances); $12 each for large appliances such as stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters; $7 each for tires 18 inches and under, no rims; $6 each for toilets; $0.25 per pound for small computer and household electronics. Ferrous metals such as barbecues and wrought iron are donation-only.
The caveat matters: the Center's published table does not list furniture. Goodwill refers ripped, stained and unsellable furniture there, but that referral is the only indication. Furniture acceptance and pricing at this site are not confirmed — call 858-268-8971 before hauling furniture to 5165 Convoy St. What the Center is reliably good for is the rest of the clean-out: appliances, tires, toilets, electronics and scrap metal.
Mattresses and box springs: the free drop-off, and what is excluded
The Mattress Collection Site at 5161 Convoy St., on the east side of the Miramar Landfill entrance, is free and open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed weekends and six holidays, with no drop-off limit. It is part of the Mattress Recycling Council's Bye Bye Mattress program.
It takes mattresses, box springs and detachable futon mattresses used and discarded in California that are not wet, soiled, damaged or bedbug-infested. It explicitly does not take household furniture, foldout sofa beds, or futon frames and bases. Keep items dry and clean and drop them separated from other waste — landfill fees may apply to mixed loads.
One discrepancy to know about: a 2023 City press release lists 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and up to 10 units per trip, while the current City mattress page lists 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and no drop-off limit. The current page is the one to plan around, and a quick call to 858-694-7000 removes the doubt.
The three Convoy Street addresses are not interchangeable
| Address | Site | What it takes | What it does not take |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5161 Convoy St. | Mattress Collection Site | Mattresses, box springs, detachable futon mattresses — free | Household furniture, foldout sofa beds, futon frames and bases |
| 5165 Convoy St. | Miramar Recycling Center | Appliances, tires, toilets, electronics, scrap metal — published per-item fees | Furniture acceptance is unconfirmed; call 858-268-8971 |
| 5180 Convoy St. | Miramar Landfill | General refuse, including furniture, for a per-load fee | Loose CRTs, TVs, appliances, universal waste, e-waste and hazardous materials inside a load |
Getting this wrong is the most common way a furniture trip wastes a morning and a tank of gas.
Renters, condos and buildings over four residences
The four-unit line is the most important distinction for renters.
Up to four residences on a lot: the building is City-serviced. There is still no furniture pickup, so renters cannot use the bins and have nothing to schedule. The options are donation or self-haul.
Five or more residences, mixed-use or commercial, private street or gated property: not City-serviced. Those buildings must use a City-approved private Franchise Hauler, and bulky collection is a hauler or property-manager decision. Ask your landlord, HOA board or property manager before moving furniture anywhere, because the City will not collect it. The published Franchise Hauler Directory is the place to see which companies are approved.
Some private haulers do advertise bulky pickups. One provider-side example: a 2024 Waste Management San Diego County residential guide lists up to two free bulky pickups per year with up to three items each and a 300-pound per-item cap, with household furniture accepted. That applies to Waste Management-serviced accounts, not to the City of San Diego service, and the document is from 2024 — confirm current terms with your own hauler rather than relying on the figure.
More edge cases:
- Do not stage furniture at the curb expecting pickup. Without a Community Cleanup flyer or a booked service it will not be collected and may be treated as illegal dumping.
- In a privately serviced building, the owner is responsible for arranging trash, recycling and organics service; HOA boards coordinate the transition, and non-compliance can draw Notices of Violation and Administrative Citations.
- Tenants are not eligible for the City's Solid Waste Management Fee financial assistance program, which is limited to homeowners whose primary residence receives City trash service.
- If you cannot haul and have no pickup, donation pickup is the practical answer — ask whether the crew can reach your stairs. The free standard pickup is curb or ground-floor only; the paid ReSupply pickup goes anywhere in the home.
Community Cleanup events — and why you cannot count on one
Community Cleanups are neighborhood bulky-item events run with community groups; the City's program text describes more than 50 a year. Residents who receive curbside service get a flyer in advance, and items set out without a flyer are not picked up.
The honest position today: the City's Community Cleanup program page was not reachable when this guide was last verified, so no event date, calendar or request form could be confirmed. WasteFreeSD says residents "may request a Community Cleanup if available," but whether an individual resident or only a neighborhood group can trigger one is unverified. Do not plan around an event — ask ESD at 858-694-7000.
What will not work: bins, the wrong door, and dumping
The bins. Furniture never goes in a City trash, recycling or organics container; items over 50 pounds are explicitly excluded, and collection crews will not take it.
The Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility. Furniture is not hazardous waste and is not accepted there. That facility is City-resident-only, appointment-only, currently open Wednesdays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and takes labeled hazardous products with proof of City residency plus photo ID or a recent bill. It is the right door for paint, cleaners, motor oil, batteries and pesticides left over from a clean-out — never for a couch.
Dumping. Illegal dumping is prohibited and reportable through the Get It Done app or site, or ESD at 858-694-7000.
Item prep: what to do before you load
- Never put furniture in a City bin, and do not set items out in alleys or on private property expecting collection.
- Choose the route first. Donation items must be clean and complete; disposal loads must be sorted.
- Disassemble large furniture where practical — bed frames, desks and bookcases load and unload more easily. ReSupply can disassemble for priority pickups.
- For self-haul: cover and secure the load; leave time to unload, since there are no hand unloads after 4 p.m.; bring a check payable to the City Treasurer or a credit or debit card.
- For donation: confirm the location — Goodwill takes no mattresses or unsellable furniture; ReStore requires functioning, complete items and recommends calling ahead about space.
- For pickups: stage items at the curb or in a ground-floor garage; no disassembly is provided at the free tier. Book ReSupply if items are upstairs.
- For mattresses: keep them dry and clean and drop them separated from other items.
- For appliances or loose metal parts, call the Miramar Recycling Center at 858-268-8971 to verify acceptance and pricing.
Safety and cost warnings
- Furniture is a physical-handling risk. Disassemble large pieces, get help with anything heavy, and never load a vehicle beyond its rating. Heavy loads also push you into a higher landfill fee tier.
- Cover every load before driving to Miramar. Loose furniture is a road hazard, and the uncovered-load fee is $50.
- Sort banned materials out before the landfill gate — CRTs, TVs, appliances, universal waste, e-waste and household hazardous materials.
- Never send furniture to the Mattress Collection Site or the HHW facility. Neither accepts it.
- Plan around closing times. The Recycling Center closes at 4:30 p.m.; the landfill closes at 4 p.m. with self-dumping until 4:30 p.m.
- A "San Diego" address is not proof of City service. If your property is on a private street, in a gated community, mixed-use or has five or more residences on a lot, City rules do not apply to your building.
Frequently asked questions
Will the City of San Diego pick up my couch from the curb? No. The City states it does not provide bulky item pickup or curbside pick-up services, and furniture can never go in a City bin. The planned bulky-item program is paused until further notice.
Can I put a small chair in my trash bin? No. Furniture and items over 50 pounds are on the City's never-in-any-bin list.
What does furniture disposal cost in San Diego? Self-haul to Miramar is $75 per load for City-generated waste ($86 for non-City waste) for Tier 1 loads under 1 ton, including a $15 recycling fee and the $8 Refuse Collector Business Tax. Donation and the mattress drop-off are free. Private hauler and paid-removal pricing is not published, so no amount can be given.
Can I drop furniture at the Miramar Recycling Center? Not confirmed. Its published table lists appliances, tires, toilets and electronics, not furniture. Call 858-268-8971 before you load.
Can I take furniture to the free mattress site at 5161 Convoy St.? No. That site takes mattresses, box springs and detachable futon mattresses only — household furniture, foldout sofa beds and futon frames are explicitly excluded.
I rent in a large apartment building. Does this apply to me? Partly. If the building has five or more residences on a lot, is mixed-use or commercial, or sits on a private street or gated property, it is not City-serviced, and bulky collection is a hauler or property-manager decision.
How do I get a charity to pick up furniture? Call Habitat ReStore at (619) 241-2221 or dispatch@sandiegohabitat.org for the free standard pickup (roughly 2–3 weeks, curb or ground-floor garage only), or ask about the fee-based ReSupply priority pickup. Goodwill San Diego answers donation questions at (619) 225-2200 ext. 197.
Does the City run a free annual bulky item pickup? Not today. The program was defunded in the June 2026 fee reductions and is paused until further notice. Pages describing a schedulable San Diego bulky pickup are contradicting the City's own pages.
What about paint, batteries or motor oil from the clean-out? Those go to the Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility by appointment, free for City of San Diego residents, Wednesdays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Furniture is not accepted there.
Can I leave furniture in the alley for someone to take? Do not. Illegal dumping is prohibited and reportable, and uncollected items can draw a violation.
Official verification checklist
- Confirm your address is in the City of San Diego ESD service area — single-family, or multi-family with up to four residences on a lot. For five or more units, mixed-use or commercial property, private streets or gated properties, contact your property manager about the building's franchise hauler.
- Confirm you are not relying on a City bulky or furniture pickup. No City crew will come to the curb; the planned program is paused.
- Mattresses and box springs: free drop-off at 5161 Convoy St., Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Do not bring furniture with them.
- Usable furniture: call Goodwill SD at (619) 225-2200 ext. 197 or donate@sdgoodwill.org, or Habitat ReStore at (619) 241-2221 or dispatch@sandiegohabitat.org, and ask about condition rules, space and stair access.
- Before any self-haul trip: call ESD Customer Service at 858-694-7000 (Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or the Miramar Recycling Center at 858-268-8971 to confirm fees and accepted items.
- Confirm hours: landfill Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (self-dumping until 4:30 p.m.); Recycling Center Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; both closed Sundays and six City holidays.
- Cover your load and bring a check payable to the City Treasurer or a credit or debit card — cash is not accepted.
- Sort banned items out first so they do not enter the landfill inside a furniture load.
- Leftover paint, cleaners, motor oil, batteries or pesticides: book a free HHW appointment at getitdone.sandiego.gov/HazmatNewReportPage and bring proof of City residency plus photo ID or a recent bill.
- Check WasteFreeSD.org for additional reuse options, treating every listing as a third-party operator to call first.
- Community Cleanups: call ESD at 858-694-7000 — the program page is currently unavailable, and items set out without a flyer are not collected.
- Re-check the City's Trash Service Updates FAQ if your question involves the trash fee or the paused service upgrades.

Verify before you act. Fees, hours, holiday closures and program status change, and the City's bulky-item pickup program is officially "paused until further notice." Confirm with ESD Customer Service at 858-694-7000 (Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–5 p.m.) or the Miramar Recycling Center at 858-268-8971 before you load a vehicle. This guide covers the City of San Diego ESD service area only — unincorporated San Diego County and every other city in the region run their own programs, and in buildings with more than four residences, on private streets, or in gated communities, the property owner or a private franchise hauler controls disposal logistics. The Miramar Landfill inclement-weather recording is 858-492-6100.
